The EU Ecolabel is a globally recognised, voluntary programme that highlights products and services with outstanding environmental performance, based on tests and scientific proof.
Independent experts verify compliance with the EU Ecolabel criteria, ensuring products use sustainable materials and avoid hazardous, toxic or otherwise harmful substances.
Successful applicants must also prove they use minimal, recycled and/or easily to recycle packaging.
Energy labels involve marking an electronic product with information about its energy usage.
They include a letter grade from A-G (or A+++ to G on some) that allows consumers to quickly compare the energy efficiency of electronics, with A being the most efficient and therefore the most eco-friendly option.
Electronic products must meet a minimum energy performance standard to be sold in the EU. It’s the manufacturer’s responsibility to ensure their products meet these standards and products are labelled accordingly.
In the commercial refrigeration industry, using an energy label on equipment is a legal requirement for fridges and freezers in both the EU and the UK.
Previously, this only applied to refrigerators with solid doors, but since 1st March 2021, this has been applied to all glass-fronted and multideck commercial refrigeration equipment.
Ecolabels were introduced more than 30 years ago, with them allowing manufacturers to proudly display that they meet the strict criteria.
The labels provided a way for consumers to make more sustainable choices, with businesses increasingly look for the ‘EU flower’ on products to guide them when comparing equipment.
Energy labels were later introduced in 1995 by the EU, but they only applied to some consumer goods.
At the time, the intention of energy labels was to encourage manufacturers to reduce the amount of energy their products use, helping customers understand the energy requirements of equipment before making a purchase.
The main benefit of energy labels and ecolabelling for businesses is the ability to easily compare energy efficiency so you can guarantee you’re using the most efficient equipment.
Any good business today should value sustainability and strive to operate in a way which limits their impact on the environment.
